Design submittals

As a design manager, part of your role is to make sure that all members of the design team submit the required documents in a specified quality on time. You create a schedule for when designs need to be submitted and establish a review process to ensure the deliverables meet the expected quality.

The submittals feature helps you digitalize this process in Dalux and gives you full control and overview of the design submittals.

Submittal process

In submittals, you can specify the required deliverables from the design team and determine who is responsible for reviewing the general quality of the submitted model, drawings, and specifications.

Create a new submittal for a selected architect or engineer for whom you want to schedule a deliverable design. Select the name, package, and flow for it, and then define the expected files.

Set a deadline and save the submittal as a draft. Once you are ready to request the deliverables from the design team, you send the submittal out and thus inform the engineers or architects about their task.

Administration

 User rights

To set up packages and review flows you either need to be a project administrator, project planning manager, or submittal manager in your Dalux project. Otherwise, contact your project administrator to create the settings in your desired structure.

Structure submittal packages and submittals

It is advisable to create a separate submittal for each discipline and design stage. Structure the packages according to the disciplines of your project, to define who is responsible for submitting the designs.

For detailed instructions on how to do this, please refer to this article: Submittals: How to set up.

If you are unsure about the disciplines in your project, you can use international standards (e.g. Omniclass by CSI, NRM by RICS) or national standards (e.g. Molio, DIN 276).

For each of the packages, you create a submittal for the respective design stages.

As a result, your submittals should look roughly like this:

If you already have a design schedule use this as orientation when creating your packages and submittals.

If the scope of deliverables is clearly defined, use placeholders to specify the expected files. Make sure to utilize this feature, particularly when the project involves a file naming convention.

Review flow

The review flow outlines the steps that submitted files must pass before they are considered to meet the required quality standards. It consists of four steps that are assigned to specific roles in your project:

  • Submittal (Submitter): The architect or engineer provides the design as per the specified quality standards.
  • Send to review (Review manager): The design manager verifies that all necessary files have been delivered in the expected quality.
  • Review: The design team reviews the design, provides feedback, and either approves or rejects the design with comments based on their perspective.
  • Approval: The design manager approves/rejects the submittal based on the review.

As a result, the setup of your flow for architectural design will look like this:
